The 2022 edition of the Michelin Guide to Japan was recently released, and it includes a record-breaking 629 restaurants that have been awarded Michelin stars. This is the largest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in any country or region covered by the guide, including France.

Of the 629 restaurants, 28 have been awarded the coveted three stars, which signifies "exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey". Of these 28 three-starred restaurants, 15 are located in Tokyo, six in Kyoto, three in Osaka, two in Kanazawa, one in Kobe, and one in Nara.

The guide also awarded 86 restaurants with two stars, which signifies "excellent cuisine that is worth a detour". 515 restaurants received one star, which signifies "a very good restaurant in its category".
